*CCA stands for Cervix Cancer Awareness
On the late Saturday morning of 7th November 2009, Biology students of Block 4 & 5 were brought to a surprise visit to the Cervix Cancer Awareness Roadshow at the Mall, Gadong from 10AM until 11.30AM.
The roadshow was on the 1st floor of the Mall where various booths were set up. Information stands were around the place and students had an option of reading them in English or in Malay.
There was a Pap Smear Test Demonstration where students were shown on how the procedure is carried out. Pap smears tests are required 10 weeks after giving birth, especially those who had given birth to their first child. The students also had the chance to look at normal cells and abnormal cells (cancerous cells) of the cervix under a microscope.
Pap smear: A test for cancer, especially of the female genital tract, in which a smear of exfoliated cells is specially stained and examined under a microscope for pathological changes.
Quizzes were handed out and if they are answered correctly, students were given goody bags.
All in all, although it was a short visit, surely students gained a lot of knowledge on the effects of cervix cancer and the factors that causes it.
Hopefully this article is helpful for future reference.
So women, be aware!
